Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

We used to take a big vacation once or twice a year, usually to another country, And since his birth, our three year old has joined us. The lucky kid has been to Spain, Croatia, and Mexico. We had a few places in mind for 2020, but of course fate had other plans.

COVID-19 has made us dream even more about visiting other places and experiencing the culture. And then as if they read my mind (or listened to our phone conversation), advertisements started appearing on Instagram for this company Bokksu.

They curate and ship snacks and candies from Japan to your home. When I mentioned it to my wife, she thought it would be a perfect gift.

It’s been fun. I got a three month subscription and I think my three year old was even more excited to try these then I was.

Some of the snacks were not as mind blowing as they sounded. The Uni Crackers for instance were crunchy and savory but had no discernible sea urchin flavor. Which might be a relief for some but was a disappointment for me.

But there were a few bags that left me yearning for a trip to a place like Japan.

My favorite taste from the first box (which is their Signature Seasons of Japan Box) were the Funwari Meijin Mochi Puffs. I’ve had mochi (chewy rice cakes) many times surrounding ice cream or as flavored little balls or as a doughnut base, but this was something different.

The mochi snacks are turned into a crunchy airy puff ball – a bit reminiscent of a meringue. They melt in your mouth. The crowning achievement with these is that they are dusted with a kinako powder, which are roasted soybeans. It gives the bites a nutty almost peanut butter flavor.

They were really unique and fun. And my three year old loved them (along with everything else in this box). So since we can’t travel in real life, we’ll have to continue to travel in the comfort of our own home.
